A look back – and toward the future! – in supporting local news as a public good in Colorado

A look back – and toward the future! – in supporting local news as a public good in Colorado

We began 2019 at Colorado Media Project with new investments and partners to build community support for local news in Colorado.

We end the year stronger. CMP enjoys more investments from local and national funders. We have many more partners, including our new fiscal sponsor, Rose Community Foundation. And thanks to the hundreds of Coloradans who have participated in CMP projects and events this year, we know that there’s a strong vein of public concern about the future of local news in our state.

The Colorado Media Project (CMP) is offering matching gifts of up to $5,000 per Colorado newsroom to help inspire more individuals to support homegrown, local Colorado news. In partnership with the national NewsMatch campaign, the CMP also will offer technical support and marketing toolkits for participating Colorado newsrooms.

The Colorado Sun celebrates its first anniversary with quality journalism and thanks to its community

On The Colorado Sun’s first anniversary, editor and co-founder Larry Ryckman writes: “None of us set out to be small business owners, but we did it because it was important and needed to be done. As I have often said, this is not a crisis for journalists. It’s a crisis for communities and — I’m really stepping onto my soapbox here — for our very democracy.”
